An Analysis of the Organisational Effects of Telework in a French Public Administration Using the Insider/Outsider Concept

This study examines the analysis of qualitative replies from open-ended questionnaires, one interview and the researcher’s reflection, through the insider/outsider concept. It is based on data from an investigation on the experiences of teleworkers, their non-teleworking colleagues and their line managers on a French public administration. The insider/outsider concept argues that the role of the researcher affects the analysis of findings because of a binary status. The insider status suggests that the researcher is able to perceive experiences of study participants because of identification with a group. The outsider status suggests the reverse. This paper examines the role of the insider/outsider status of the researcher and its effects on the interpretation of data, using quotes from study participants interlinked with a narrative. The interpretation of findings through the insider/outsider concept reveal insight into workers’ perceptions of identity, cultural/social cues, and workplace symbols and contribute to a new understanding of the organisational effects of telework in the French context.
